may 2011 cover of vogue with reese witherspoon

may_2011_vogue_cover_reese_witherspoon

I've created a Feng Shui Color Guide for the BOA Style blog, and I have found myself deeply immersed in Saffron Yellow. In Feng Shui, Saffron is a "Yang" color, which makes it a very powerful force of energy in our lives. In fashion and home, I've found too much of Saffron, Orange, or Gold can be overwhelming. I once painted my apartment bright yellow because I thought it would help me get over a bad break-up. It worked, but if you let the color go too Orange, it can become oppressive and stressful. I have first hand experience with this as well, but I won't tell you more to protect the innocent ;) As for wearing Saffron, I'll leave that to others, however, the May 2011 Vogue cover of Reese Witherspoon really illustrates how powerful Saffron is--she just jumps off the page, doesn't she? You can almost feel her energy and excitement, and knowing that she actually is at a point of new-beginnings and renewed energy, it's just all the more fitting, don't you think?

Have a beautiful day!

XO

Emily

Women & Architecture

Women Architects Zaha Hadiid Matilda Howard

Architecture is a male-dominated profession, with prestigious awards like the Pritzker Architecture Prize most often going to men. Rarely do women architects receive headline-grabbing commissions. (Here's where I give props to my friend Alexis Anthony who just started a fab new job at Diane Von Furstenburg, designing stores--woot woot!).

Landscape Embracing Architecture by Tatiana Bilbao

If you need me, I'll be by the pool

The Universe House (pictured) was built by Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao. Bilbao was an urban planner and decided she'd rather build things and be a part of the urban environmental conversation. She "embeds" her projects into the surrounding landscape by shadowing the aesthetic cues in the topography. Read more in this interview by Stefano Boeri on Abitare.

The Kennedy Center Honors 2009

Last night I watched The Kennedy Center Honors of 2009. Seriously, five of the most amazing artists who have ever lived. Mel Brooks, Dave Brubeck, Grace Bumbry, Robert De Niro, Bruce Springsteen. These are people who used art to transcend circumstance, and to illuminate the human condition as they experienced it. Please take a moment and let the amazing, brave, beautiful, divine Grace Bumbry inspire you with song.

Jude Miller: Handmade Flowers as Art

Daisy

I am enraptured with the work of Jude Miller. She makes delicate, exquisite flowers that rival the intricate beauty of the real thing.

I think that it takes a true love of something to be able to capture the littlest details as she does.
