Clothes and Memories: Fern Mallis on Fashion Week

It's here. Fashion Week in New York. Since moving to the city in 1994 (gulp), I have been involved in one way or another in this event.

Source: wmagazine.tumblr.com via lise on Pinterest

My earliest Fashion Week experience was during my first "real" job in New York, working for Donna Karan. The assistants (like me) were often asked to work behind the scenes during the shows. Headset on, clipboard in hand, I'd help wrangle the VIPs, stay out of the photographers way, and tactfully move people into their proper seats. I'd also steal glances at the runway, where I'd mentally note the items I wanted to order with my tiny--but awesome--clothing allowance. Now when I occasionally go to a Show, it's just not the same. Whereas it used to have a purpose, now it seems like it's just a big spectacle. This NY Times piece featuring the iconic Fern Mallis nails it. The whole intention of Fashion Week seems to be...what? Designers have been bullied into giving their clothes for free to most of the people at the show--bloggers, celebrities, celebutants, etc.--it's become a little ridiculous, and not really a good business proposition to spend money on the Shows. I am sure this is why so many designers are cancelling shows and instead holding in-house presentations for buyers and top editors. I think the downward spiral began, unfortunately, in the late 90's when celebrities were invited and given the coveted front row seat which used to go strictly to the buyers, editors, and couture clients. In other words, the people who actually, you know, help the designer sell their designs. I think it's important to remember that NY Fashion Week features many small businesses, many hardworking designers and staff, and it's supposed to be a boon to the industry, instead of another fancy way of getting something for nothing at all.

Queen for a Few Days: BRIZO + Jason Wu

Source: tumblr.com via Stéphanie on Pinterest

Last week, I had the pleasure of being a part of the BRIZO Fashion Week program which takes place twice a year here in NYC. There are so many wonderful things I want to share with you about the experience. I was treated to a wonderful stay at the Eventi Hotel, catered to with delicious food, and basically treated like royalty. I met 18 of the most talented, dedicated, passionate interior designers and stylists who inspired and taught me so much about the design industry. I got to know the amazing BRIZO team, marketing, branding, design, pr--all of whom are so talented and professional. And, I got to go to the Jason Wu Spring 2012 Fashion Show. Which was spectacular. But would you be surprised to learn that the highlight of my week was hanging out with my new blogger pals and the BRIZO team? And meeting Jason Wu, of course. I loved hearing about the BRIZO brand, and the design and production process of the kitchen and bath fixtures. I am always captivated by the process of things, each of the intricate steps that lead up to great design is what interests me the most. Whether it's fashion or faucets, or both, I like to know how things happen, and I am so thrilled I got a little glimpse into the world of BRIZO. And I can't wait to share more with you from my experience.

Me and My Lands' End Bathing Suit

LANDS_END_BATHINGSUIT_2 Yup. That is a picture of me at the beach in my new Lands' End bathing suit. On my blog. Which is on the Internet. Very daring of me, don't you think? Granted, it's not quite what you'd refer too as an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini...for reasons which I will leave to you to determine. This year, I realized that the suits I had were either too small, or too large. It's an annoying in-between zone. I could open a clothing store with the multiple sizes that are sitting in my closet. I purchased two bathing suit bottoms and three bathing suit tops, which means I can mix and match, which I love. I also love this particular suit--the pattern is really cute, the material comfortable, and it's great for swimming. It may not be itsy-bitsy--but it is polka dot, and pretty chic at that. Do you ever wonder why all of the bathing suits made for women in my market are so hideous? The prints on the average tankini are just bad. You know what I'm talking about. The only thing I'm not so crazy about with this suit is the ruching in the front of the skirt--it's a little too much. Overall, I am completely happy with my suits. I wish more brands would figure out that when a woman wants a little more fabric, that doesn't mean she wants any less style. Good job, Land's End.

More about Lands' End:

*Lands' End began as a Sailboat equiptment company in 1963 by Pan American Games gold medalist sailors Robert Halperin and Richard Stearns

*The apostrophe was a typo--should have been Land's end--which the owners couldn't afford to change. Back in the days before digital, when type was set, it was set...

*Sears Holding purchased the company in 2002 for $2 billion in cash

*The company is now based in Dodgeville, Wisconsin

* Dodgeville has one of the country's largest state parks

*Dodgeville is a part of the "National Mainstreet Program"

Bamako Chic: Women of Mali & Threads of Power, Color & Culture

                                               Watch more free documentaries

In tiny parts of the globe, some of the most innovative and powerful minds in fashion are connecting with small producers of fabric and more to make and sell their fashions. Now there's a one-hour documentary film that charts the voyage of women in Mali who took their financial fate into their own hands to create a real enterprise--Bamako. Read what the filmmakers say after the jump. (I found this via Parlour Magazine.)

Jason Wu at Versailles with Robert Polidori

Women enter the room with eyes shielded from the prying eyes of strangers. Their clothing is demure, conservative. We're not in the Middle East—we're at the Fall 2011 Jason Wu ready-to-wear show.

ART_BLOG_GWS_JWU_VERSAILLES1 As The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Vogue.com will tell you, Wu’s most recent collection was influenced by the restoration of Versailles, specifically the photographs from the 2010 publication by photographer Robert Polidori, “Parcours Museologique Revisite”.

ART_BLOG_GWS_JACONWU_FIN3But they are wrong. The photographs which influenced Wu are of the destroyed Versailles…the pre-restoration palace. At least, that’s what I think. Robert Polidori is a renowned photographer who has captured moments and places in the most unusual way—a behind the curtain look at our world. A house in Katrina with water still receding after the flood, a post-Chernobyl Nuclear Plant control panel. Real places, real things. His images are both a question and an answer—Question: What happens when people build society? Answer: This is what happens.

ART_BLOG_GWS_JASONWU_POLIDORI I’m not sure what exact elements inspired Jason Wu—the colors, the draping, the texture. Maybe it’s the beauty that still exists within the turmoil, the glimmers of hope you can still see in the wreckage at the bottom of the sea.

Daphne Guinness Undressed on Nowness.com

Daphne Guinness: Undressed on Nowness.com.

I've long held a certain fascination with Daphne Guinness. She is beautifully intriguing. Of course, it's easy to be transcendent and Contra Mundo, as she describes herself, when you have gobs of money to play with. However much she is the very image of a decadent culture, I am struck by the fact that she places herself at the center of the cultural cognoscenti, artists, designers, architects driven by their need to create. I think she probably looks at her life as her own "creation." In "Daphne Guinness Undressed" she talks about being present, living with intention--clearly she is a Yogi, as her slow-mo plank into Chaturanga shows-which I like. I get the feeling that it really isn't about status for her, and I respect the fact that she's not a drone following along with the herd. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.

may 2011 cover of vogue with reese witherspoon

may_2011_vogue_cover_reese_witherspoon

I've created a Feng Shui Color Guide for the BOA Style blog, and I have found myself deeply immersed in Saffron Yellow. In Feng Shui, Saffron is a "Yang" color, which makes it a very powerful force of energy in our lives. In fashion and home, I've found too much of Saffron, Orange, or Gold can be overwhelming. I once painted my apartment bright yellow because I thought it would help me get over a bad break-up. It worked, but if you let the color go too Orange, it can become oppressive and stressful. I have first hand experience with this as well, but I won't tell you more to protect the innocent ;) As for wearing Saffron, I'll leave that to others, however, the May 2011 Vogue cover of Reese Witherspoon really illustrates how powerful Saffron is--she just jumps off the page, doesn't she? You can almost feel her energy and excitement, and knowing that she actually is at a point of new-beginnings and renewed energy, it's just all the more fitting, don't you think?

Have a beautiful day!

organic cotton's dirty little secret

Unfortunately, at this stage, even the label won't necessarily tell you everything you should know about the item. A label may say "MADE WITH 100% Organic Cotton" vs. "100% Organic Cotton Clothing" which is a distinction nobody probably even pays attention to...Because I have experience writing copy for product and I think this difference makes a difference--for legal reasons, a company may want to be sure they say "contains" because then they can include whatever they want and still keep the Organic Label.

This is why the GOTS--Global Organic Textile Association--label is so important, it does regulate the environmental and ethical standards at every stage of the entire manufacturing process. I only know about GOTS because of my client, BOA Style. All of their Organic items have this label.

If you'd like to see all of the chemicals used after the Organic Cotton is grown, harvested, and turned into fiber then fabric, go straight to the source Textile Manufacturers, Exporters & Suppliers website. Here are a few links for more information and resources about Organic Cotton:

Organic Trade Association

Patagonia: About Organic Cotton

About Organic Cotton

Sustainable Cotton Project

Behind the Label (the very best, most comprehensive source for all things ethical business related.)

I'm also a adding few brands to my recommended list:

NAU

HessNatur

Winter Water Factory*

*I just purchased a few items from this store for my little girl and we love the organic cotton designs! I'll share photos and more next week.

Does all of this information make sense to you? Please let me know if you have any questions or information. Remember, I am learning too!
