Memorial Day: Things to Do In & Around New York City

MemorialDay2012
Still looking for things to do this Memorial Day Weekend (like me)? Let me share some of my last-minute-ideas as I try to plan our weekend...

You can go to an eletro-disco party or a take a trip to Coney Island---Papermag.com shares a few cool ways to spend a staycation in the Big Apple.

Have you ever been to Mystic, CT? The annual Lobster Days events which kick-off today might just be the perfect reason to go.

Or maybe head south to Cape May, NJ for the whale cruises, marching bands, sun, sand and surf.

Meet Ukrainian-born Artem Rapin, a Native American-Flute Maker, in New Paltz, New York at the weekend-long Woodstock-New Paltz Arts & Crafts Fair.

We always go to the Devon Horse Show, in PA, which has rides, food, and horses (obv.) Maybe we'll see you there?

Whatever you do--have fun, and wear sunscreen!

Words with Friends

Words have new powers in the digital age, and we're only beginning to understand the unexplored possibilities. Tweets are transforming journalism. The lost art of copy writing has temporarily been submerged by the communication tsunami--how can brands communicate and distinguish themselves in an overcrowded landscape?

Los Nereides Gold Alphabet Necklace Selfridges

In our time of mass (-ive amounts of) communication, it seems only appropriate that London store Selfridges and cultural connoisseurs It's Nice That should host an event series to explore the power of words.

FORTUNES

The first event featured Artist, coder, writer, and publisher James Bridle, brand strategists We All Need Words, and The Guardian journalist Paul Lewis. The final event will take place this week on February 23rd. Click for details...

design philadelphia with dupont corian

Last week I took a short trip down to Philadelphia for DesignPhiladelphia, the nation's largest one-city celebration of art and design. Across the city, in galleries and public spaces of all sizes, design was on display.

Design Philadelphia   I was in-town to see my friend's sister's installation, which I will tell you more about in my next post. We spent a day walking around the city, collecting ideas and inspiration. The day we left, we made a stop in nearby Manayunk, which is a hot-bed of interior design and architectural firms. I scored some Prada shoes in chic-consignment store Greene Street. I also bought some farm fresh vegetables from a local Amish Farm Stand, and some mini-pies too. It was a great trip, and the only downside is that what was a minor cold has now morphed into a sinus infection and Bronchitis, which is why I am somewhat devoid of excitement. I promise to be more colorful and cheery tomorrow, when I'll show you the Dupont Corian sponsored design project my friend's sister created. It's pretty amazing.

P.S. Check out how Corian is helping a small Kansas town with their sustainable rebuild after being destroyed by a tornado in 2007.

design bloggers are the new curators at nydc

What's New What's Next Event kicks off today at the New York Design Center, 200 Lexington Avenue (at 33rd). The "New Curators" will be live-blogging, tweeting, and doing what we all do best--sharing the newest design, products, and people in the world of Interiors.

Whats New Whats Next NYDC
I know a few of these talented bloggers, but I am looking forward to connecting with all of them in person. The great thing about blogging is that you can really "get to know" people from all over the world, which opens you up to so many more ideas and inspirations. As someone who has lived in New York for going on 20 years, I know how easy it is to get myopic in your thought process. And as a stay-and-work--at-home mom, it is ever so helpful for me to be able to "log on" and learn from all of these creative, clever, and unique voices. I often find myself living vicariously through some of their jet-setting lives as I hold a baby on my lap in front of the computer! I am very excited for a day of design, and I hope you will join us, live or in person.

the ripest peach is highest on the tree

takamaya japan fruit

We took a trip to Northwestern Connecticut this weekend. My family has a home in this little slice of heaven that is Litchfield County. I always leave rested and refreshed. And aren't I lucky to have such parents. I have not told you before, but I grew up with two people who can really cook. No, I mean, really cook. The meals they prepare are to die for. On our way home, we picked up some fresh peaches, which we had for breakfast this morning along with the homemade cornbread, and the blackberry preserves my father made. It’s as if we brought a little bit of country back to the city with us. I write a lot about the importance of really using your dining room for family meals. There's nothing more eco-chic, or sustainable, than preparing a meal from scratch, working side by side with your loved ones, and sitting down to enjoy the fruits of your labor, together. My most vibrant memories will always be sitting around the table with my family.

*If you'd like your own homemade blackberry preserves, try ordering them from the Loveless Cafe, Nashville, TN.

This morning I added a few new images to my Etsy Shop, as well as to my Flickr group "Eco Chic Home." I'm feeling full of energy, no doubt because of my restful, delectable time in the country. Simple pleasures can always be relied upon to do their job.

(3)The Cherry Blossoms are in bloom! From March 27 until April 11th the Nation's Capital will celebrate the annual festival. The festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 Cherry Blossom Trees to the U.S. from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo. Thanks! Here's a link to a moving article about the story behind the Cherry blossoms.

Enjoy!

Couture Defined

71ZFS7A2VQL._SS500_.gif

Couture is often used in the wrong context. It really should be used to describe fashion that is designed and built for an individual. Ready-to-wear is what you buy in the store. Often what goes down the runway is Couture, and is an exaggerated version of what the designer will actually sell-in to stores. It is high-art, conceptual, it is the fire that ignites a new line. If you'd like, you can experience Couture first had at the New York Couture Fashion Week in September. Go here for your $1500 ticket. ;)

P.S. Balenciaga was the ultimate in couture, designing one-of-a-kind garments that famously flattered the figure.

Martha Stewart Radio on Sirius Satellite Radio

I was on Martha Stewart Radio's Morning Living Show, Sirius Channel 112 and XM 157, last week to talk about my new book, Eco-Chic Home. I was so thrilled that they asked me to be on the show.

_MG_8513 I've been there twice before, once to talk about my Eco-Chic Weddings book, and once to talk about a green wedding article in Martha Stewart Weddings that featured some of my ideas (read more about the wedding here). When the hosts, Kim Fernandez and Betsy Karetnick, asked me about a project in my book, I told them about the wire vessel made from a wire hanger (pictured above). But then I forgot to mention an idea that would have been a perfect one to share...grrrr. I thought of it about five minutes after I left the building. Don't you just hate that? So, I will tell you about the idea I wanted to share--it has to do with a long leather coat from the late '90s and a pair of scissors. Check back later today!

P.S. By the way, be sure to check out the Martha Radio Blog, there are two great posts you should read about container gardens (yes, Spring is on its way) and also about The French Laundry.

Eating in Season with Local Harvest

IMG_1223

On a warm Fall afternoon, we stopped at one of a dozen roadside farms along New York's Route 9.

IMG_1281

Replete with all of the season's bounty, the farm we visited was also home to a couple of child-size tractors, including this gree one which immediately caught my daughter's eye. While she contemplated life as a farmer, the adults were in search of Fall vegetables and, of course, the prerequisite Halloween pumpkins.

IMG_1297

I was also eager to find some winter squash, specifically acorn squash so that I could make a new recipe. Predictably, my two and a half year old daughter is fast becoming a picky eater. She is relatively easy--she does like a few members of the vegetable family, including: edamame, broccoli (sometimes), and carrots (full disclosure: only when cooked with brown sugar). I include fresh vegetables with every meal, and I wanted to give Rachel Ray's Butternut Squash Mac n' Cheese a try. Conventional thinking is that Squash is a vegetable. Actually, Squash is a fruit and it was first grown in Mexico, 10,000 years ago. Squash was one of the Three Sisters: corn, beans, and squash, and Native Americans taught the early colonists how to grow these three crops.

We found everything we wanted, and with squash, pumpkins and children in tow, we loaded up the car with our bounty and headed home.

LAYOUT_FALL

Here's the recipe that inspired my pursuit of squash:

Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese Recipe courtesy of Rachael Ray

 Ingredients

  • 1 pound macaroni with lines, such as tubatini or mini penne rigate
  • Salt
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leaves, plus a few sprigs for garnish
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups vegetable stock
  • 1 (10 ounce) box frozen cooked butter nut squash, defrosted
  • 1 cup cream or half-and-half
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) sharp Cheddar, grated
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano, a couple of handfuls
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, eyeball it
  • Black pepper

Directions: Heat a pot of water to boil for the pasta. While pasta cooks, heat a second medium size pot over medium heat, an add olive oil and butter. When the butter melts into the oil, add the thyme and grate the onion directly into the pot. Cook the grated onion in butter and oil 1 to 2 minutes, stir in flour and cook mixture 1 to 2 more minutes. Whisk in stock, then combine with butternut squash until warmed through and smooth. Stir in cream or half-and-half and bring sauce to a bubble. Stir in cheeses in a figure 8 motion and season the completed sauce with salt, nutmeg and pepper. Taste to adjust seasonings. Drain cooked pasta and combine with sauce.
