Memorial Day: Things to Do In & Around New York City

MemorialDay2012
Still looking for things to do this Memorial Day Weekend (like me)? Let me share some of my last-minute-ideas as I try to plan our weekend...

You can go to an eletro-disco party or a take a trip to Coney Island---Papermag.com shares a few cool ways to spend a staycation in the Big Apple.

Have you ever been to Mystic, CT? The annual Lobster Days events which kick-off today might just be the perfect reason to go.

Or maybe head south to Cape May, NJ for the whale cruises, marching bands, sun, sand and surf.

Meet Ukrainian-born Artem Rapin, a Native American-Flute Maker, in New Paltz, New York at the weekend-long Woodstock-New Paltz Arts & Crafts Fair.

We always go to the Devon Horse Show, in PA, which has rides, food, and horses (obv.) Maybe we'll see you there?

Whatever you do--have fun, and wear sunscreen!

Spring is for the Birds

NATUREWALKS

I hope you've been enjoying the early days of Spring. I recently paid a visit to the Audubon Center in Sharon, CT where I picked up a few more bird callers. I'd really love to figure out how to put some bird feeders outside of our windows without having them overrun with pigeons. If you're lucky enough to live a relatively pigeon-free life (no offense to the pigeon lovers out there), Birdfeeder.com has a lot of Bird stuff for you avian enthusiasts out there.

See you soon!

Summer in the City

Blue Skies and Sunshine

Blue_skies

Many people don't realize that New York City has some of the best light in the entire world. Artists have flocked to the Hudson River for many years because of the particularly amazing light. I live at the Northernmost tip of the Island of Manhattan, and the sky is brilliant, especially in the Summer time.

Things To Do: New York City

Planning a day in NYC with my family is one of my greatest joys. We really do take advantage of everything the city has to offer. The Met, MoMA, CMOM, and AMNH...are all affordable things to do two energetic toddlers in New York City. But when the weather is nice, it's much harder to think of something good for everyone. So far, here are a few ideas:
1. Pony Rides at the Bronx Equestrian Center in Pelham Bay, New York
2. A Nature Walk in Inwood Hill Park in New York City (my neighborhood).
3. A drive to Montclair, NJ (my hometown) to see the Presby Iris Gardens
If you'd care to share, please tell me what you're doing this weekend, I'd love to know.
Whatever your "things to do" are, I hope you have a delightful time!
XO

things to do: new york city

Source: scrapscene.com via Holly on Pinterest

Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day...it's another beautiful, crisp, cool day in New York City. Waffles and Nutella for breakfast, a mid-morning nap for my two year old, and all the laundry finished (by my awesome husband) before noon. Now we are ready to have some fun. Here's my list:

1. Return some books to the New York Public Library

2. Order my four year old a new pair of sneakers

3. Vacuum (this is the vacuum I wish I had: Dyson) and clean the furniture with my brand new bottle of Method Home Almond Wood Cleaning Spray, which not only works like a charm, but I can let my four year old help me clean without worrying about toxic chemicals.

4. Go to the park, run around, sit in the sun, and don't come inside until our fingertips and noses are too cold to stay outside...

What's on your list today?

Wishing you a wonderful, sunny, relaxing Sunday.

XO

P.S. This little blue bird jar reminds me of outdoor adventures in the woods with my Grandmother, hunting for early-Spring creatures...

luck be two ladies

get your green on st. patrick's day

St. Patrick's Day snuck up on me, not unlike luck itself--with it's strange and wonderful ways. I almost forgot to wear any green clothing for St. Patrick's Day--oh no! Perish the thought. I had to go back and change before I left the house. I like St. Patrick's Day, well I like any day where the main focus is wearing green clothing ;) Mostly I like it because it reminds me of my Mom and my Grandmother, two lovely Irish lasses I was very lucky to know. Whatever you did I hope you had a fun-filled Green St. Patrick's Day--even if you forgot your green too.

my daughter turns four: how to have a birthday party for a rootin-tootin cowgirl

kid birthday parties carousel My daughter (as I mentioned before here) just turned four. Everyone tells you how fast the time goes when your children are small and it's true. She's my first, my girl, my little love. My son is two, and of course he also has his own special little corner in my heart. My daughter is not a pretty-pink-princess gal, but she's also not a total sporty tomboy (sorry if you hate that word) either. Rather than dolls, she loves her stuffed animals, "pretend kitties" as she calls them. She loves them so much that she's started to toss cat food into the shopping cart when I'm not looking. She also loves horses (not that she's ever ridden one), so much so that she wants everything in her life to somehow involve horses--so of course her birthday party was a cowgirl "theme." We had the party at Bear Mountain State Park, a very special place about an hour North of NYC. We visit the park all of the time in all seasons--swimming in summer, visiting the outdoor zoo in fall, sledding in the wintertime, and of course, the real reason for our frequent visits--the indoor carousel. My kids ride that carousel about a dozen times whenever we visit. I guess you could say we're regulars.

I tried to keep it simple (as would any sane mother of a 2 and 4 year old whose birthdays are two weeks apart). As I mentioned last week, we've all been sick--a lot. Which means not much time for the pre-planning.

cowgirl kids birthday party invitation pingg First, I sent this invitation (via Pingg.)

party favors horses kids Then (the day before the party) I went to Michael's (with both of my kids) and came up with the decor and party favors...We gave all of the kids little canvas bags each with a fabric pen (non-toxic) and a handkerchief (they picked which color they wanted). I also got some wooden popsicle sticks, cut[out horses and stuck them in the bags--I figured the kids could have fun painting those too and they would serve as decor at the party.

horse themed birthday party I made a banner with extra handkerchiefs, and a Happy Birthday garland with twine.

cupcakes 4 year old birthday party ideas

We made cupcakes (frosted them on-site--which makes transporting them so much easier)

And that was about it. Planning a four year daughter's  birthday party doesn't need to be complicated to be cute and fun. My philosophy about simple entertaining ideas is that it doesn't need to look like it was easy to be easy. I work with the props I already have, which tend to be colors that I can work with in many different ways. When choosing the right location for your event you might try to find a place that has some design elements you already like, that way you don't need to go overboard with decor. This is just one example of how I try to think "holistically" about where I make my consumer decisions. I don't try to be too extreme about making eco-friendly choices but I do try to always be a conscious consumer. This is why I don't really think of myself as a typical eco-friendly advocate because quite often the style choices I make aren't what most people would consider to be super-green. For me it's most important to be mindful first, and then do what works in the context of my life. We all need to make our own decisions and own it--and not let anyone make you feel like you're doing something wrong because there is no right and wrong. Just remember that.

Here's a rundown of my party-planning approach:

1. We held the birthday party at a State Park, so our money went to support a place that provides recreation and fun for anyone and everyone.

2. I requested that no napkins, paper plates, utensils etc be provided by the venue...we served pizza and juice (we did have juice boxes and our own eco-friendly napkins). So the juice boxes aren't so green--but the alternative would have been Soda...

3. I tried to create a favor that would be used by the kids rather than thrown away. I find my children love little bags--for carrying toy cars, mini-horses etc. I made an effort to pick non-toxic paint pens.

4. We made the cupcakes at home...from a box...because I'd already made a birthday cake earlier in the week. I was wiped out. So, not such a green decision, but then again no plates or plastic utensils needed...plus they were delicious.

5. We sent birthday party e-vites, so no paper wasted there.

6. We chose a place that had a couple of different things to do--the carousel, an ice rink, lots of places to walk around and explore. Our state parks are precious--so we need to use them, enjoy them, and support them.

I think that's about all, but if I think of anything else I'll add it. Do you have any cute and simple kids party ideas you'd like to share with me here on Good with Style? If so, I'd love to hear about them.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

If you know me at all you know that going out at night is a rare occasion in my life. I used to be a party girl (really), but now--not so much. Tonight, however, I'm going out (I'm such a dork) to a Tweet-up at the Moss store in SoHo...I am looking forward to seeing the cool stuff they have (above items, for example), plus, I really think they need to carry my book, don't you? Have a great night.

happy almost spring to you!

ART_DOVIMA_1952_PINKBLK
Have you missed me my dear readers? I've been dealing with the Winter sniffles on a grander scale--we've had a bout of Strep throat in our home. I guess it's going around. I had it last week, my daughter the week before, and now my two year old has it. He's feeling better now, though. Also, we have two very important birthdays in February and March--Sam turned two in Feb and Sydney is four today! Yes, that's right, their birthdays are two weeks apart. For Sam, we kept things a little low-key--we celebrated in the country at my parent's house--it was perfect. Now this weekend we have Sydney's Birthday Party (more on that later.) Of course, I had to make her a cake for today, her actual birthday. So I am sending you all early-Spring greetings, because I feel it in the air already--don't you?

just ask a local

garance dore new york local

After a few weeks of hearing about New York from visitors, I was happy to find this interview on Garance Dore. You know what they say--if you really want to know a place, go where the the locals go. I might also like it because Kate actually mentions local hot spots that I know. Have a wonderful "local" weekend wherever you are.

m&j trim: the insider's source for all that sparkles

ART_BLOG_FCM_MJTRIMFIN

Thought you might enjoy a peek into the behind-the-scenes world of Good with Style. As you can see, my little assistant is manning the stroller after a very productive visit to M&J trim. If you've never been, this is a NYC must. Trim in general is also also a must for savvy fashionistas who like the runway-look but can't afford it. Remaking your clothes is definitely an excellent way to be sustainable, and there a many mavens online who can give you some inspiration if you'd like to try it at home. Actually, M&J is now hosting a "Blogger of the Month" with DIY ideas.

Marimekko was a big part of my childhood--my mom used their fabrics in her design work. I have a lot of samples still in my stash (the fabric print you see here on my blog is...Marimekko circa 1970). Enjoy the video!

happy saturday + nyc slush is snow-fun

ART_BLOG_LOYALLOOT_SHIRTCOATHANGER20110121_1
As you may know, NYC and the entire northeast has received a ton of snow over the last month or so. 20 inches this week in Central Park! Now it's like a giant Slurpie in the streets of New York. Best to stay indoors, I say. But my kids and husband have decided to go to Bear Mountain Park an hour and a half north of the city--to go sledding. Good for them ;) How about you? How are you spending this not-so-fair Saturday?

Mindfulness Over Money: Shop Smarter

The thrill of victory is, we’re exiting earth. We're leaving all this dirt*

Annie Leibovitz Sex and the City

A few years ago, I read the New York Magazine article about Annie Leibovitz and her money woes. I came to the conclusion that her life is a sort of documentary of our post-60's culture. From the beginning, Leibovitz was at the center of the cult of personality--she was one of the behind-the-lens witnesses to the birth of the "rock icon." As a result she acquired what she terms "power by association."

34990019

(Lebovitz image: Jessica Biel as Pocahontas)

But as it turns out, the power Annie Leibovitz was somewhat fleeting, and in recent years she found herself with more money going out than was coming in...Unfortunately, She had (unwittingly) given the rights to her photos away. Leibovitz Emmylou Harris

(Leibovitz image: Emmylou Harris in Tennessee)

Her financial conundrum bears more than just a resemblance to what so many people find themselves dealing with today as we muddle our way through this financially challenging era. Leibovitz may be one of the worlds greatest photographers, she still got into trouble the same way most of us do--over-spending.

Leibovitz_dia06_02

(Leibovitz: Mary J. Blige NYC)

Since the 1960's, we've become a consumer based economy, which means we don't make the goods, we buy the goods. The money is now made on Wall Street and spent on Main Street. No matter what your job is--or how much money you make--photographer, trader, writer--we are all too easily seduced by the idea that power, love, acceptance can somehow be purchased as easily as a gallon of milk. Or a pair of Louboutins.

Alice-in-wonderland-by-annie-leibovitz-1

Which reminds me, NY Fashion Week is coming up, which is in some ways an exercise in futility--it used to be the only way to see the newest creations, now it's all over the web before the week even begins. Now they are a party (or a lot of people), rather than a necessary work event. Nonetheless, people still want the cache of the label. If someone has a (real) Birkin, Loro Piana cashmere sweater collection, Frette linens, etc., do we not assume that person has money and does that also mean power? Most of us don;t have that kind of money, and can't (shouldn't) pretend that we do. And even if we did, at a certain point we all feel a little oppressed by things...whether it's your car payments, school loans, a mortgage...it costs a lot to have "things." Don't get me wrong, I like nice things as much as the next person. But, if we are going to be a consumer culture, at least we can be more mindful of where our stuff comes from. The best part is--mindfulness is free.

Finding Joy In My Cooking

  f.schumacher
Not so very long ago, I realized that my husband doesn't necessarily like to cook, it's the time he gets alone in the kitchen while I'm wrangling the kids that he likes. I guess this was what Oprah calls an "aha" moment. I find the moment I step into the kitchen, I find a relaxing place that I can not find anywhere else in my day. For the first time, cooking became an actual pleasure. I've discovered the joy of cooking, I suppose you could say. This morning I made waffles with Nutella and fresh Clementines...and everyone went off with happy full bellies. Although I would never call myself a foodie, I definitely know my way around the kitchen. I learned to cook at a very young age, and I spent a lot of time working in and around professional kitchens. I like to cook, but I wouldn't describe it as a passion. To be a successful cook you really need to know how to plan...ironically I have a little trouble planning for things (it's called procrastination). But when I put my mind to it, I am an exceptional planner--so now I am going to make "meal planning" a new priority in my life. Of course I need some inspiration, and these are a few of my favorite foodies to follow:

Chez Pim

Ideas in Food

Oh Joy Eats (The amazing Joy Deangdeelert Cho of Oh Joy! fame--she changed the name but I just loved the first name she used for her food blog: "Happy Lady Eats".)

Matt Bites

Giada De Laurentiis

Nigella Lawson (LOVE her)

Canelle et Vanille

Smitten Kitchen

Sous Survivor*

Michael Laiskonis*

*These last two are not frequently updated, but they are chock full of incredibly succulent food writing...

Question: Do you like to cook?
Tell me some of your favorite weekday dinner ideas.

the inevitable new year's resolution post: more & less

You knew it was coming, or at least, it should come as no surprise to you that I'm going to write about...my New Year's Resolutions!

Well here they are, in no particular order:

The More List:

1. More time exercising

2. More adventures in the City

3. More profit ($$)

4. More time with friends

5. More traveling

The Less List:

1. Less sugar

2. Less time in front of the computer

3. Less time worrying

the christmas tree is up & sparkling in my eco chic home

christmas tree decor We finally have our decorations in place. I like to keep it simple, and work with the colors I have in my home. As usual, I make use of extra fabric and other items I already have. I also like to sneak something from my children in every photo I take (that Breyer horse was mine and now Sydney claims it as her own). My book Eco Chic Home has a dozens of ideas for Christmas decorating, gift-giving, and entertaining. It really is a great gift itself (hint hint).

The blanket in the photo is from my book. It was made by the lovely Kendra Smoot, and the project is super-duper easy. It's just felted squares from old sweaters sewn together. Here's the image from my book, photo by Seth Smoot:

handmade wool blanket In case you live in a space that's even smaller than my apartment, here's a creative and easy alternative to a Christmas tree...also a project in my book:

Only a few more days left until the big day, but it's never too late to get in the festive spirit with a few ribbons and bows...and a smile, of course!

eco friendly toys: wooden play kitchens

wooden play kitchen miss darcy

wood play kitchen blue eyed yonder

I've been on the hunt for a play kitchen for awhile now. I've given serious thought to making my own, but with the limited space we have I am not sure that's such a good idea. As you probably already know, I'm partial to old school toys. Of course I could always repurpose a piece of furniture into some sort of kitchen. When I found Etsy seller Blue Eyed Yonder, I thought I'd died and gone to the great beyond (er). Seriously freaking adorably cute. She needs a contract with Home Depot stat. Miss Bonnie and Miss Darcy have pretty much left me speechless and unable to formulate any more thoughts on the kitchen quest, so I'm going to table (ha) the discussion until after the New Year.

art school at emily's house

A discussion in today's #DesignTV Twitter Chat hosted by @ABCDDesigns and @JohnathanLegate prompted me to share a couple of unusual "art" pieces in my home.

framing kid art
This is a painting by moi, circa age four, that my mother framed and gave to my father as a gift. It has since hung in the Living Room of the various houses my family inhabited over the years. Now it is in the nursery where my children can enjoy it. Many of my parent's friends thought it was "real" art. Or maybe it was just one tipsy cocktail party attendee. Anyway, it is a story that has been told many times.

  KIDART7
This is an example of "primitive art" which I acquired at a house sale a few years ago. I have a mind to replace or paint the frame, something a little lighter would lift the mood of the piece I think, perhaps making it a more cheery element in the children's quarters. These curtains were made with textile fabric remnants and velvet...I didn't have enough of any of it to make four curtains, so I cut pieces and created my own "design." I like that the children's space is filled with repurposed items from other parts of my home. It proves that you can always make a special space no matter what your budget.

KIDART5
As you can see, Children's Art shows up everywhere in my home--both high and low. The unframed piece is by my Designer Mom, here it's found a place high on the wall...When I walk into my bedroom, I see the painting and it makes me happy.

  KIDART3

KIDART4
Here's another shot of the children's room with paper chinese lanterns that were used on a photo shoot a few years ago. Above the bookshelf, I've framed a collection of embroidery pieces my brother brought me from Mexico.
  KIDART6

Hanging above Sydney's bed is an original lithograph by Jean de Brunhoff creator of Babar, the famed Children's series of books and a favorite in our bedtime reading repertoire. I hope you've enjoyed this mini-tour of where my mini people exhibit their work.
