ABC--Always Be Creating

Source: abchao.com via Elle on Pinterest

I've long believed that we just don't have enough creativity in our lives. Humans are naturally ingenious, creative, curious. It's why we've survived for so long, after all. I feel so lucky to have a very creative career. As a mother, it was a necessity for me to figure out how to have a career, and be close to my children. But even I sometimes forget the pure joy in sitting down with or without my kids and create. These colorful sticks remind me of just how simple it can be. And look how pretty they are, too. XO Emily

Bamako Chic: Women of Mali & Threads of Power, Color & Culture

                                               Watch more free documentaries

In tiny parts of the globe, some of the most innovative and powerful minds in fashion are connecting with small producers of fabric and more to make and sell their fashions. Now there's a one-hour documentary film that charts the voyage of women in Mali who took their financial fate into their own hands to create a real enterprise--Bamako. Read what the filmmakers say after the jump. (I found this via Parlour Magazine.)

Tweeting on Saturdays + Do We Spend Too Much Time Online

the cyclotrope by tim wheatley

I came across this on Dwell and it's pretty awesome. Do we spend too much time online? Yes of course we do. Shouldn't you be spending time with your loved ones and refrain from tweeting on Saturdays? Social media sometimes feel all consuming. The Cyclotrope by Tim Wheatley is a reminder of how fun it is to turn the computer off, put the iphone away, and instead use your hands to create something. And wait until Monday before tweeting about it ;)

Upcycle for Eco-Chic Wedding Style

Source: etsy.com via Emily on Pinterest

Here's an Etsy designer with a myriad of delectable details to add eco-chic style your wedding day. I love these gloves, as well as the beautiful head-pieces in her collection. I thought these gloves were also an excellent idea for up-cycling heirloom lace from your grandmother or mother's veil, or dress. Enjoy!

I hope your June is going well. Between looking for a house, getting our Summer plans together, and my babysitter being on vacation, I've been swamped--witness this post being written at 11:54 pm Friday evening. When life is whirling around you, it is the perfect time to practice mindfulness so that we can be be present for the delicious little details of our daily lives. XO Emily

eco-friendly container and vase inspiration

Source: hutchstudio.blogspot.com via raccoon on Pinterest

I'm seeing a lot of newspaper plant containers, these with chicken wire are especially clever. I love to make designs using wire hangers (which can not be recycled--fyi). Here's my take on the wire container idea, which was inspired by Steaks Frites, which I believe are often wrapped in newspaper in their containers, n'est pas? _MG_8513

marie antoinette let them eat cake + shop the fleas

"Relax and Slip Your Pronouncing Eyes Like Cake..."

Marie-antoinette-costume

(Kirstin Dunst as Marie Antoinette)

Marie Antoinette is known for her love of cake, but did you know she is also famous for inventing the flea market? Well, sort of.

Marie_antoinette_screen1_large

Legend has it that she was standing high above the place that would be known as Les Puces de Paris--The Paris Flea Market, looking down upon the crowd when she remarked "Oh but they look like little fleas." Or something like that.

LetThemEatCake1

Whether or not this really happened, one thing that is for certain true is the long and rich history of The Paris Flea Market, and all of its progeny.

*This line of poetry is from:

A Domestic Film

by Amy King

This is the director’s cut,
a traveling space in the folded crook
of your plotted hand like silver night
on a thousand platters spreading westward,
then plywood. I watch the brittle flower spread,
almost mobile with her walking petal plans—

Feminine form to feminine prone,
relax and slip your pronouncing eyes
like cake, only softer and heated,
across
the unmarried wife waving goodbye
to the silent screen world of strangers
safely baking on Dishwater Island.

because everyone has a little valentine in them: heart pillbox hat & queen of hearts paper doll

ART_BLOG_GWS_VALENTINE_LAYOUT Before I sign-off for the day, I'll share these two red hot Valentine's Day items: The red pillbox hat..heart-shaped of course, by La Petite Menagerie, adorable. And then there's the Queen Of Hearts paper doll, which frankly has left me speechless. Wait until you see La Lapin Triste's (Francophile much?) other dolls--she has Sylvia Plath (with oven and all) version. Brilliant. But back to happier things. I'm sending you all love whatever your plans may be, and feeling incredibly thankful for the many new ways we have to connect, share, and spread the love all across the world.

merimekko and converse collaboration

Marimekko was a big part of my childhood--my mom used their fabrics in her design work. I have a lot of samples still in my stash (the fabric print you see here on my blog is...Marimekko circa 1970). Enjoy the video!

pretty pottery on design*sponge

ART_BLOG_DESIGNSPONGE_DEBBIEPOWELL

This vignette in the home of Illustrator Debbie Powell is a great example of how to create little bits of beauty all around your home. The pottery, the fruit and flowers (and plant) work together in a really pleasing palette. This is the kind of thing that makes you smile whenever you see it, and that's exactly what home is all about, don't you think? Good night!

dispatch from: sew weekly french style dressing

ART_BLOG_SEWWEEKLY_LOGO

This Monday's dispatch is from the mind-blowingly creative blog, The Sew Weekly. This blog began as an experiment by its founder--Mena--where she wanted to try and sew all of her own clothes. Every week, for one year, she took us through her parade of new outfits. And man, the girl can sew.

ART_BLOG_SEWWEEK_ISEEPARIS
Considering how long it takes me to finish projects, I am impressed. You will be too.

This outfit is perfect--what's cuter? The hair, shoes, tights, red lips, bow--Oh my, I love it all.

xo

Emily

P.S. Do you or have you ever sewed? I've been sewing since I was still in the single digit numbers--8 or 9 years old I think--but I've never really become the master seamstress I aspired to. Now I blame it on the lack of a dress form. But really I'm just lazy ;) I do sew for my kids, though--it's an excellent cost-cutting cuteness-boosting measure. If you could make any dress in the world--what would it be?

happy saturday + nyc slush is snow-fun

ART_BLOG_LOYALLOOT_SHIRTCOATHANGER20110121_1
As you may know, NYC and the entire northeast has received a ton of snow over the last month or so. 20 inches this week in Central Park! Now it's like a giant Slurpie in the streets of New York. Best to stay indoors, I say. But my kids and husband have decided to go to Bear Mountain Park an hour and a half north of the city--to go sledding. Good for them ;) How about you? How are you spending this not-so-fair Saturday?

*Always on the hunt for the best space-saving designs, I am in love with this one from new-favorite source--Loyal Loot Collective.
