Has anyone ever told you to "just be yourself?" Chances are the first person to say it was your Mom or Dad. Unfortunately, it seems to be something we tend to forget on a daily basis. Maybe it's what we hear from the media--"you should look like this person", "your car is lame, you need a cool car like this one"-- messages reinforcing natural human insecurities we all share. Now with Facebook, we can spend hours online comparing ourselves to our "friends" and maybe even perfect strangers who just happen to keep their photos visible to everyone (people--update your security preferences regularly--please!) While there isn't anything wrong with this, it certainly isn't a very productive way to spend your time. We waste so much time looking for the secret to success--but the most successful people already know to be great, just be the very best version of yourself. Sure, as brands we need to know about the competitive landscape, gleaning new ideas from other successful businesses that might work for ours. But no matter how much information we gather, we need to remember who we are and put it into the context of our unique brand. Don't try to be like other brands. Just be yourself. If you're a rock, be a really amazing rock.
