Wedding Venue Menu Ideas

wedding venue menu planning

When Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon began writing their book, Plenty, they discovered that most ingredients in an average meal travel a distance that is the same as between Boulder, Colorado and New York City. Thus, the transportaion of food across the country from farm to plate is a major contributing factor in the high-levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Smith and MacKinnon spent an entire year eating food produced within 100 miles of their Vancouver home, and it wasn't easy. You're not writing a book, so you probably don't want to make that much of a commitment. But you can find simple ways to eat local--get more information and ideas that might work for you, and for your wedding, of course, at localharvest.org.

Couture Wedding Dresses by Alina Pizzano

For those of you interested in knowing how a wedding gown is created from paper to production, you can read all about it on the blog of wedding gown designer Alina Pizzano.

P.S. You may already know this, but I have a little bit of a pet peeve about how the term "couture" is bandied about. Read more about it here...

Photographer Lisa Dawn + Flag Bunting

3993383264_c5a888807e

Today's props go to Photographer Lisa Dawn from the UK sent me her photos from this wedding, it was held on an organic farm (Huntstile) in Somerset.

016_AJ290809

I love the simplicity of the overall affair--it makes the vibrant color palette really pop. Nice bridesmaid dresses--for sure you could wear these again.

094_AJ290809

I really like the wedding gown--a straight column, really a sheath, with straps (yay) and a very simple train. Elegant, timeless, beautiful. And the groom looks awesome in his (wear it again Sam) suit. And love the flower petals (no rice please, and bubbles--yawn)

DSC_0987

And I leave you with the cute bunting--looks to me like a little Cath Kidston moment. See, it's not so hard, right? Now tell me what you're NOT doing to make your day a little more simple, sane, and sustainable!

*As always, I do not get paid to post, Eco Chic Weddings is a strictly editorial site so you can be sure I don't showcase just any Tom, Dick, or Marry. (get it?)

Look in the Attic for Milk Glass Cake Stands

I found one of my favorite sources, Look in the Attic. You can find practically anything in the way of transferware, jadite, and depression era glass...all of which are totally my style.

Lookintheattic

From top left: pink jadite tiered cake stands (set of three, $110.99); green jadite cake stand ($74.99); porcelain transferware serving tray ($34.99); white jadite tiered cake stands (set of three, $110.99); depression era glass cut bowl ($64.99); depression era glass cake stand ($49.99);  depression era  era glass bunny rabbit serving dish ($24.99).

Whether you use these pieces for your wedding, or just register for them, you will find so many uses for them, from entertaining, to decor, to everyday use. I can not tell you how many times I used cake stands for events when I worked for Martha Stewart. Growing up, my grandmother had all of these pieces as well. I guess that's where my love affair for milk glass, hobnail, and depression era pieces comes from.

The Paris Flea for Vintage Wedding Style

154438298_67397ad660_o
If you don't already know, one of the great wonders of the world is the Paris flea market. When I worked in fashion,  there was a woman whose  official title was "Inspirational Shopper." She traveled all over the world and shopped. That was her job. Seriously. Whenever she returned to NYC,  her luggage was a virtual treasure trove of the lovely and the sublime. She always went to the Paris flea market. The most famous flea market in Paris is the one at Porte de Clignancour, officially called Les Puces de Sain-Ouen, or Les Puces (The Fleas). Not going to Paris soon? Thanks to Le Petit Garage, you can (sort of) visit the Parisflea market whenever you desire...je suis enchante...If you do go to Paris, rent a real Paris apartment in the 18th Arrondissement (where Les Puces is) via The Paris Apartment.

Artist and Designer Alyson Fox

Artist Alyson Fox has an individual artistic expression that I find refreshing. She doesn't just recycle other people's ideas...but, with her very small collection, she recycles materials--from buttons crafted out of fallen tree branches, to repurposed fabric, every item in her line puts the "friendly" in eco-fashion...

Af_fin

And in case you weren't aware, Alyson also has the most delightful drawings for sale as well.I previously posted one of Alyson's drawings here. *Items in this post are from prior collections, but she has some super items available now. Support small designers for your wedding and your home! Some of the bags she has are perfect gifts or favor for your guests...

CB Vintage: Wedding Cake Toppers, Milk Glass Vases, and More

classic bride, vintage weddings, cake toppers, vintage cake toppers, cb vintage

Classic Bride has recently launched a new web site. CB Vintage is a wedding and event resource with a well-edited selection of vintage items, including the cake topper above. I appreciate the focused approach to the product offerings because it shows she really knows a good thing when she sees it. Makes it so much easier for the harried bride or the busy wedding planner to find exactly what they're looking for.

Beautiful Healthy Cook Books

There's a good reason why reporters protect their sources--it's where their most valuable content and ideas come from. This is true for wedding writers, bloggers, and even planners themselves. You can get a lot of wonderful ideas from wedding blogs (go here to check out the top 100 Wedding blogs to follow). But there are other sources you should use as well. Cook books, for example.

Cookbooks and Wedding Menu Ideas

My current fave: Falling Cloudberries by Tess Kiros. This book is just perfect as a wedding reference, not only for the delicious food ideas, but also because the author plays homage to her family and it's history. She has the most adorable family tree illustration. I could see this idea incorporated into a wedding feast quite easily. After all, the wedding is really a celebration of the past and the future of a family. Your family.

What are your Food plans for your wedding? Are you trying to do something different (local)?

How about the cake: Are you having your reception site handle this, or are you getting your cake from someone else? Or are you doing something instead of the cake (cupcakes, perhaps?)

I'd love to hear about your plans. Leave a comment and let me know!

Brilliant Earth Ethical Conflict Free Diamonds

brilliant earth diamond engagement rings
Just because it glitters doesn't mean it's flawless. Unless you're diligent, the origins of your diamond engagement ring might include unspeakable atrocities perpetrated against other human beings. Not to be a downer, but is the ring really more important than the life of another person? 72 Billion dollars worth of diamonds are sold every year in the US. So really, if you do nothing else, please be very careful about which ring you choose. You could even go with something that isn't a diamond, just like I did.
