Wedding Venue Menu Ideas

wedding venue menu planning

When Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon began writing their book, Plenty, they discovered that most ingredients in an average meal travel a distance that is the same as between Boulder, Colorado and New York City. Thus, the transportaion of food across the country from farm to plate is a major contributing factor in the high-levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Smith and MacKinnon spent an entire year eating food produced within 100 miles of their Vancouver home, and it wasn't easy. You're not writing a book, so you probably don't want to make that much of a commitment. But you can find simple ways to eat local--get more information and ideas that might work for you, and for your wedding, of course, at localharvest.org.

Finding A Wedding Venue

AudreyGoforth

If you find the right location, all you really need to do is show up. There are so many historic locations that would be perfect for your wedding, libraries, old homes, or restaurants. Keep your mind open to the possibilities, don't get locked into a place that will end up costing you more money to transform it into something you actually like. Get advice from someone who knows the ins and outs of event spaces in your area and keep it as simple as possible. Easy doesn't mean it won't be fabulous. But it will make your costs go down, which is always a good thing.

Marie-Gael + Michael:
How to Get Married in a Cave

Plan Your Wedding. Design Your Life.

MarieGaelOpenShot

Marie-Gael (29)  and Michael (26) were married in November 2009. In a cave. You can read all about their nuptials on Offbeat Bride. But what happened after the wedding? I spoke with Marie-Gael several months later, and she filled me in.

Rent or Own: Rent Apartment or House: Apartment Are you happy the wedding is over? Marie-Gael: I'll put it this way, I'm happy I'm married and I'm happy dating is over. Emily: How long did you spend planning the wedding? Marie-Gael: 3 months Emily: Was this enough time? Marie-Gael: Yes it was. I don't think long engagements are a good idea. The people I see doing this end up stressing out.  The way I see it, if you've found the person, why wait? Emily: Good point. Did you know what you wanted? Marie-Gael: (Three months) sounds like it would be a frenzied rush, but honestly, if you keep it simple, it's not. Emily: How did you keep it simple?

Marie-Gael: I've been making inspiration boards for everything since I was a teen, so it was much easier for me because I had a file on my computer that would amount to an inspiration board and lists of possible area resources. It must be an artist thing. I have those files for everything.

Emily:  Any planning tips?

Marie-Gael: If you're putting off marrying the love of your life just so that you can afford the perfect napkins, the perfect dress and be the perfect princess--then maybe you should think about that.

How to Plan a Wedding BBQ: Grass-Fed, Hormone-Free, and Farm-Raised

what-a-burger mooresville north carolina

I once planned a really awesome bbq for the Martha Stewart annual company party. It was at her house in Bedford (Katonah). It was amazing. I've also been to a real bbq contest. In Iowa. My Dad has a smoker. I'm just saying, I know from bbq.But that being said, if you want to have a bbq for your wedding, fine. Just look for LOCAL food sources...here's where to start:

Local Harvest -- lists organic farmers and cattle ranchers nationwide. Find one near you and then check to see which wedding resources are available--ie, venues that work with the organic and/or grass-fed ranches. Buzz words: Hormone Free, Grass Fed, Free Range, Humane, Free from Anti-biotic

Youngblood Grassfed Farm -- Learn about how grass-fed is really raised, and why it's so much better for you and for the world.

Pleasant Valley Farm -- Read more about life on a real farm, including photos and description of the work animals and the animals raised for meat. I think if you are going to eat meat, then you should at least be in touch with what that really means.

Simon Pearce Baskets from Africa

Cvt

As I was walking home from the Adele Wechsler and AVEDA event (Hamanasi Resort and Sugar Flower Shop were there too) last night, and I walked by Simon Pearce on Madison Ave. These basket bowels caught my eye. They are woven from the root of the makenge bush by the Mbunda tribe in Zambia. These are considered to be traditional wedding baskets because they are so useful in the home. It's a symbol of starting a new home, and life, with your betrothed. You can learn more, or add them to your wedding registry, here.

Read more about the women who make these baskets here.

{eco-chic} honeymoons: travel wisely

Every year, couples spend about 8 billion dollars on honeymoons (Conde Nast Survey 2006). Hence, you can make an enormous impact, both on the environment as well as on the people who live in the places you travel to. I've listed my top ten resources for planning your eco-chic honeymoon, as well as an excellent article from May 2007 Conde Nast Traveler illustrating how important our tourism dollars are to building a better world.

OurweddingdaypicFor their August 18th, 2007 wedding, Vancouver residents Brock and Tanya prove that you can be both eco and chic. As a designer at lululemon athletica, Tanya obviously knows good design; She and Brock also show off some good green sense with their excellent website. Check out all of the great eco-chic ideas they've come up with. Theirs is a fresh, modern take on responsible consumerism, and I like it!

Wedding Reception Centerpieces

wedding reception centerpiece ideas

In lieu of flowers, how about mis-matched candle holders spray-painted wedding-worthy hue. I suggest a grouping with white tapers on tables dressed all in white--tablecloths, napkins, china. What a pristine setting this would make for your wedding...you could add a few flower arrangements around the room--with locally grown blooms. So chic, so simple, and you can give each lumiere away to a guest (just tie a cute card at the base of each with the guest's name.)  For less than $5 a piece, you can't go wrong. How's that for a bright idea?
