Handmade Wedding Cake Ideas

Ed_pck_dsharp

d.sharp, aka Diane Sharp, meticulously designs handmade items that have graced the pages of Martha Stewart, Country Living, just to name a few. Ms. Sharp sells her creations directly to the public, so you can get her one-of-a-kind items for your very own. Her cake toppers are especially fabulous. When it comes to events, I like to put the focus on a few key elements, such as the flowers, the cake, or the table settings, rather than taking a crap shoot approach and trying to make everything perfect, big, and meaningful. All great event designers know that focus is the key to a successful event, so even if you spend a little more on something like a handcrafted item from d.sharp, it will elevate the experience of your entire event.

For my wedding, each guest recieved a poem. I've always loved poetry;  Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens  and Tennyson are my favorites. When I happened upon the site, Daily Poetics, of course I had to share it with you...and don't forget the poetry, we need it...

Wedding Invitations + Handmade Favors

Il_fullxfull.206623135
(Recycled Crochet Rug by EKRA on Etsy)

I often write about sending wedding invitations that can be reused, or even saved by your guests. Some ideas you may already know aboyt: seed packets with a bellyband for the invite, an ornament that can be hung on a tree. But, don't do anything tacky, like a magnet. Here are two ideas I really like from past issues of Martha Stewart Weddings:

Bookmarks

Bookmark_msw

The bookmark idea is really for save the date, but I think you could just as easily turn this idea into your wedding invitation. I have always loved glassine envelopes (probably not too eco-friendly), but you could fill the envelopes your favorite {fair trade} tea, or locally harvested, or organic, dried lavendar. The envelopes pictured here have confetti, and are favors, but I think an invitation with the same idea would be sweet too.

Inv_gift

Here's another idea--how about sending crocheted coasters/trivets your guests will actually use? These would also be lightweight--so the postage won't be too expensive.

At the very least--please ask for eco-friendly paper!!
When I was planning my 2005 wedding, and writing my book at the same time, I went to countless invitation web sites and combed the sites looking for recycled paper options, to no avail. Things are changing, but now almost all (wise) stationers---such as Not From A Box Unique Invitations---offer recycled, tree-free, or FSC options. Really, this is a simple thing everyone can do to make a big difference.

{eco-chic} wedding inspiration:
carol belanger grafton

Long a resource for designers, the books produced by Carol Belanger Grafton (Editor) range from the sublime to the pedestrian (think: Vicotorian era flourishes, and animal sticker books). They also provide some  great inspiration and ideas for an eco-chic event. Let this also be a reminder that inspiration need not come from a "wedding" resource...

I personally have absolutely no problem with online wedding invites. There are a plethora of chic options available. Tell me...how do you feel about online wedding invitations? Please leave me a comment and let me know!

(Many resources allow you to design your own graphic style, or else they provide images, such as this one from Real Simple.)

so, are you engaged yet?

Don't you just hate it when people ask you that when they think it's about time you get married to whomever you're dating? Well, I certainly did when I was in that situation. Maybe you could send out some "not-yet engaged" announcements. What do you think?

Here are some nice options should you go that route:

I know its a little annoying, but try to remember that people are asking you, because, let's face it, everyone loves a love story.

Send the card above just to, you know, let them know you're still having a good time (even though you're not engaged--yet.)

inspired wedding palette: colourlovers.com

I love www.colourlovers.com. It's so inspiring and a really great resource for creating your wedding palette. And with the right colour combinations, you can get a big impact while reducing the amount of things you add to your wedding decor (flowers, table cloths, etc.) If you chose a vibrant combination, you could even just use swathes of fabric--which then can be saved and reused...

You can have a "destination" wedding without leaving town--just incorporate some fun and quirky travel themes into your wedding planning. But if you are leaving on a jet plane for your destination fiesta, think about reducing your impact in other ways--carbon offset programs, recycled invitations, online rsvps....and bon voyage!

*unruly things* and emily post

Wwepd_fin

i have long recommended skipping the save-the-date and save-the-paper instead. i still think a printed wedding invitation is a special and important part of the experience...but no judgment if you do send everything electronically. i know some people feel this is not proper etiquette. but i like to say that the internet wasn't around while emily post was alive, and her recommendations have always been based on good common sense as well as being selfless, rather than a selfish person.

Sunali_graphic

alyson of sunali design can bring beauty to your wedding. and make your wedding more eco-friendly. and save you money too. i am giving alyson the "Eco-Chic Weddings Editor's Choice" award. i hope she approves of my own novice design skills ;)

Sunali_2

you can read more about alyson and sunali, as well as an excerpt from my book about mindful weddings on the indie weddings guide...

and as for the great wedding-email debate, publsher's weekly wrote in a review of emily post's updated book "etiquette" this:

"The original book was considered revolutionary in its time because it recast manners from rigid Victorian rules into behavior that was based on ethics, values and common sense."

Did you know that Brides.com has an entire Eco-Chic Weddings (no relation to me) section on their site. Honestly, who would have thought the eco-zeitgeist would hit as hard as it has? Maybe Brides will ask me to be a contributing editor (hint hint ;)

If you have a moment, take a look at some early posts to see how my blog has evolved.

{a little peep from me} celebrate fiber arts + learn how to make paper

Just a couple of little things from me...still buried under my book project...first...

Fiber_biennal
If you happen to be in Philadelphia, maybe you can go to the Fiber Biennial at the Snyderman-Works Gallery. Artists such as (from left) Kari Birch, Susie Brandt, and Nancy Herman exhibit their work, and express the many transformations and applications possible with materials...from felt, to beads, to paint. And then...

Emmeline Apron Side OneMischievous Gnome Messenger Bag Picture

Take a look at the lovely Montessori by Hand, and perhaps purchase one of her sweet aprons, or buy yourself a pattern and make it yourself. And, she has a fantastic tutorial about how to make your own paper...another example of how to transform fiber goods and extend their usefulness.
