Handmade Wedding Cake Ideas

Ed_pck_dsharp

d.sharp, aka Diane Sharp, meticulously designs handmade items that have graced the pages of Martha Stewart, Country Living, just to name a few. Ms. Sharp sells her creations directly to the public, so you can get her one-of-a-kind items for your very own. Her cake toppers are especially fabulous. When it comes to events, I like to put the focus on a few key elements, such as the flowers, the cake, or the table settings, rather than taking a crap shoot approach and trying to make everything perfect, big, and meaningful. All great event designers know that focus is the key to a successful event, so even if you spend a little more on something like a handcrafted item from d.sharp, it will elevate the experience of your entire event.

Look in the Attic for Milk Glass Cake Stands

I found one of my favorite sources, Look in the Attic. You can find practically anything in the way of transferware, jadite, and depression era glass...all of which are totally my style.

Lookintheattic

From top left: pink jadite tiered cake stands (set of three, $110.99); green jadite cake stand ($74.99); porcelain transferware serving tray ($34.99); white jadite tiered cake stands (set of three, $110.99); depression era glass cut bowl ($64.99); depression era glass cake stand ($49.99);  depression era  era glass bunny rabbit serving dish ($24.99).

Whether you use these pieces for your wedding, or just register for them, you will find so many uses for them, from entertaining, to decor, to everyday use. I can not tell you how many times I used cake stands for events when I worked for Martha Stewart. Growing up, my grandmother had all of these pieces as well. I guess that's where my love affair for milk glass, hobnail, and depression era pieces comes from.

Menu Ideas :: Ukrainian Wedding Bread Cake

Robert lio ukrainian dancers

The winner of Tessa Kiros' cookbook "Falling Cloudberries" is....Larissa Banting. Here is her response "At my wedding, we served a traditional woven Ukrainian wedding bread, complete with handmade little bread doves. Truly a work of art. A woman in her 80s was the artisan (sadly, she's no longer with us) and having this link to my family's roots was very meaningful and special"

I'll be honest--I chose Larissa because I really wanted to post a photo of the traditional Ukranian wedding bread (though these photos aren't of Larissa's wedding). How pretty is that? I hope this inspires you as much as it inspires me, and reminds you how food can be so much more than just something to serve. It can be symbolic, decorative, and a unique expression of your personal history.

(Read more about the Ukrainian Wedding Bread, or the 'Korovai" here.)

Larissa is also the owner of Weddings Costa Rica, so if you have a destination wedding in mind but just can't decide where to go, take a look at her site!

Beautiful Healthy Cook Books

There's a good reason why reporters protect their sources--it's where their most valuable content and ideas come from. This is true for wedding writers, bloggers, and even planners themselves. You can get a lot of wonderful ideas from wedding blogs (go here to check out the top 100 Wedding blogs to follow). But there are other sources you should use as well. Cook books, for example.

Cookbooks and Wedding Menu Ideas

My current fave: Falling Cloudberries by Tess Kiros. This book is just perfect as a wedding reference, not only for the delicious food ideas, but also because the author plays homage to her family and it's history. She has the most adorable family tree illustration. I could see this idea incorporated into a wedding feast quite easily. After all, the wedding is really a celebration of the past and the future of a family. Your family.

What are your Food plans for your wedding? Are you trying to do something different (local)?

How about the cake: Are you having your reception site handle this, or are you getting your cake from someone else? Or are you doing something instead of the cake (cupcakes, perhaps?)

I'd love to hear about your plans. Leave a comment and let me know!
